Environment Ministry concludes CITES workshop

Ministry of Environment and Energy has concluded the workshop on the trade of livestock held for customs officers.

The workshop was conducted under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which is an international agreement between governments which aim to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

During the workshop information was provided regarding CITES and the responsibility of customs service in implementing the treaty. The workshop organised by Environment Ministry saw the participation of 30 custom officers.

The role of customs services in protecting endangered species is crucial, Minister of State for Environment Abdulla Ziyad said speaking at the function held to conclude the workshop. A draft has been prepared for the procedures for CITES import, export and re-export, according to the State Minister.

This is the 8th such workshop held in Maldives.
