MITDC to begin practical work of Baresdhoo project in 2 months

Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC) has revealed that practical work of Baresdhoo project will begin within two months. MITDC stated that land is being handed over to guest house developers to start off the practical work.

Managing Director of MITDC Mohamed Shahid noted that 33 land plots were leased from Baresdhoo Island to operate guesthouses. The Corporation aims to bring Baresdhoo into operation within the next 18 months if the development is being carried out according to the schedule, said Mohamed Shahid. He further revealed the establishment of 33 guest houses will boost business opportunities for Maldivians, adding that land will be leased for other tourism-related business in the future.

Baresdhoo in Laamu atoll is a 72.5 hectare large island, which takes a 40-minute domestic flight from Velana International Airport to Kahdhoo Airport and a 5-minute boat ride to reach Baresdhoo. Upon opening, Baresdhoo will become a unique holiday destination in the region and the host to a diverse range of hospitality services that range from resorts to beach hotel, according to MITDC.

MITDC already completed the construction of the port harbor in neighbouring Mahakanfushi Island as well as the causeway that connects Baresdhoo to Mahakanfushi. MITDC is a 100% Maldivian Government-owned corporation established in 2016, mandated with the development of integrated tourism in the Maldives.

To diversify the growing tourism and hospitality industry, the Government has been looking into exploring the possibility of tapping into the mid-range tourism market that is currently growing in the Maldives.
