Opposition rally would not be allowed: Police Service

Maldives Police Service has cited that the authority would not allow any form of protest in any part of nation as the scheduled protests by the oppositional alliance is not expected to be peaceful.

Maldives police have received intelligence that a group of people are preparing to create unrest in the country through the protest rally set for tomorrow, Superintendent of police Ahmed Shifan revealed at a press briefing.

The Superintendent said that under the State of Emergency declared by President Yameen on February 5, right to strike and freedom of assembly have been constricted and therefore the gathering organised by the opposition would not be allowed. In this regard, Shifan advised the public not to avail to the call by the oppositions to join the rally.

Spokesperson of police Shifan affirmed the police service would continue its efforts to maintain peace and harmony in the nation and stated that strict action would be taken against any individual who does not abide by this principle.

On this note, reports has been filed about a fire set to an electrical distribution and two houses of Addu city. Shifan revealed that 8 individuals have been arrested in relation to the three fires set in Addu City.
