Maldives hosts Side-Event on Ocean Sustainability

Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that achieving the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 14, is critical for the continued growth and development of Maldives, as it is inextricably tied with the ocean.

Delivering the opening remarks at the Side-Event hosted by Maldives on The International Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the Environment Minister stressed on the importance of increasing scientific knowledge of the marine environment. An efficient way to gain the necessary knowledge is through cooperation in marine scientific research between States, which will help to move all States towards a more detailed knowledge of the oceans in an economical manner, according to the Minister.

The Side Event held in New York, provided an opportunity to exchange on the nature, scope and modalities of developing and implementing the International Decade of Ocean Science.  The proposed International Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development aims to provide Member States with a framework for coordinating and consolidating the observations and research needed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14.
