Maldives advancing toward healthy, happy futures for senior citizens, says First Lady

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has announced that the Maldivian healthcare sector is actively steering toward the vision of building a nation where senior citizens can lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Serving as the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the senior citizens' gathering in Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll—held in conjunction with World Mental Health Day—the First Lady emphasised that mental well-being is an essential component of human life, requiring focused attention particularly for the elderly.

Describing senior citizens as the honourable pillars of society who have made profound sacrifices to shape the nation, she noted that respecting and caring for them is a fundamental value underscored by Islam.

"We wish to see a Maldives where senior citizens experience happiness and smiles," the First Lady said.

She highlighted the increase of senior citizen centres across the country over recent years, praising the valuable activities already taking place and expressing confidence that their roles will expand to alleviate loneliness and foster positive mental health.

The event, featuring a special forum titled "Issrahvehinge Sallaa" (Senior Citizens' Dialogue), was organised by the National Mental Health Department and attended by the Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Geela Ali.

During the forum, National Mental Health Department Director General, Fathimath Leena addressed the psychological shifts associated with aging. She stressed that community inclusion, social participation, and attentive listening are vital to enhancing elderly mental health.

"Instead of viewing the elderly merely as people who need assistance, acknowledging that their experience and knowledge are invaluable... will undoubtedly bring meaningful positive change to their lives," she said.

The gathering concluded with interactive sessions, including discussions sharing personal experiences, an informational seminar on dementia and cognitive health, and engaging physical activities tailored for the participants.
