Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Public Service Media (PSM), in collaboration with local media, government authorities and non-governmental organisations, began a nationwide telethon to assist Rohingya Muslims. The telethon by Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Public Service Media (PSM) is held in collaboration with media organizations, government authorities and non-governmental organisations, to assist the Rohingya Muslims affected by the conflict in Myanmar.
Speaking at the launching of the telethon, Deputy Managing Director of PSM Mohamed Ikram Abdul Latheef stated that Islam is a religion which is exemplarity in values such as providing charity for those in need.
The PSM Deputy Managing Director said the telethon is an endeavor carried out with the purest of intentions and noted that Maldivians are always known for their kindness and compassion in providing assistance for those in need, especially Muslim brothers and sisters. He further urged as many Maldivians to take part in the telethon.
Speaking at the launching of the telethon, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Bagir said that Maldivians have always been in the forefront in assisting Muslims who are affected by misfortunes. The Minister also spoke on the importance of giving away charity in the religion. The telethon will provide information on various national and international efforts to provide assistance to Rohingya Muslims.
Donations for the telethon can be made through fund boxes placed in various locations, bank transfers to dedicated accounts of Bank of Maldives and Islamic Bank as well as SMS through Dhiraagu and Ooredoo telecommunication networks.
The telethon which began will continue till the end of tomorrow. However, contributions will be accepted via fund boxes till the 30th of this month. According to the United Nations, over 422 thousand of Myanmar's minority Rohingya population have fled the country's western state of Rakhine to neighbouring Bangladesh, since the violence began on August 25, after Myanmar's brutal military crackdown on Rohingya muslims in Rakhine state.
