WAMCO begins special project to clean Male' City

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has begun a special project to clean Male' City due to the increase in littering since the beginning of Ramadan. The amount of waste generated in the month of Ramadan, is relatively high, compared to other months. Every year, the amount of waste generated in Ramadan, sees an estimated 25 percent increase compared to other months.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Ali Amir said that littering on the streets have become commonplace. He called on the public to refrain from doing so as such practices would directly affect general hygiene and safety. He noted that despite the fact that WAMCO has begun waste collection and waste management with the help of the latest equipment, it is important for citizens to realize their individual responsibilities.

WAMCO has begun collecting waste from households, schools and commercial buildings. WAMCO has also begun an awareness program targeting those who work in waste collection, to familiarize them with the new regulation on collection of waste in vehicles, which would be implemented on the first of July.
