President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has discussed renewable energy, digitalisation and health sector development with World Bank Regional Vice President for South Asia Johannes Zutt.
Zutt paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu at the President’s Official Residence, Mulee’aage.
During the meeting, President Muizzu thanked the World Bank for its continued support to the Maldives and outlined the government’s development priorities, including digitalisation and strengthening the energy sector.
Renewable energy was a particular focus of the discussions, with the President highlighting efforts to reduce the Maldives’ dependence on imported fossil fuels and cut spending on fuel imports.
The two sides discussed the need for affordable, reliable and sustainable energy solutions, as well as opportunities to expand cooperation in the sector.
They also discussed continued World Bank support for the health sector and the Maldives’ broader development goals.
President Muizzu stressed the importance of reducing expenditure while ensuring development projects remain sustainable and aligned with the country’s long-term needs.
He also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting ongoing and future development projects, while noting the role of the private sector in complementing public-sector efforts.
Zutt reaffirmed the World Bank’s readiness to support the Maldives in areas where it can provide assistance. He also highlighted the potential of renewable energy to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel and related vulnerabilities.
