Human capital important for National Development: Vice President

Vice President Abdulla Jihad has said that the most important asset for the development of any nation is its Human Capital and that education is the key to its enrichment. The Vice President made the statement at the function held, Monday night, to honor the top achievers in the 2016 higher secondary exams.

Vice President Abdulla Jihad said that academic scores of students who completed the higher secondary exams last year, stands proof to the advances in the education sector. He said that the current administration has provided ample opportunities to foster the skills of Maldivian youth, through higher education. He noted that all students who passed in three or more subjects in the higher secondary exams are eligible for student loans by the government.

The Vice President called on all students to respect their Maldivian identity and honor patriotism, even if they pursue higher education in foreign countries. He also applauded the hard work by parents and teachers and called on students to appreciate their hard work.

In 2016, 189 students from 21 schools scored the top ten ranks in the higher secondary exams. They consist of 43 students from schools in the atolls and 146 students from schools in the greater Male' region.

Also addressing the function, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Shiham stressed out on the importance of finding out areas where expertise in required in the country while going to higher education. She said that it was remarkable that the students who achieved first place boost every year and it is a huge accomplishment for the education sector of the country and noted that last year a record number of students achieved the award.

Furthermore, the minister added that the government strives to facilitate every child with education under the policy "no child left behind".  Moreover, Minister Aishath Shiham stressed on the importance of working together and learning new languages which would enable every child to work as a team.
