President sends congratulatory message to President-Elect Macron

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom sends a congratulatory message to the President-Elect of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron.

In the congratulatory message, the President said that he wished success in the new challenging assignment. President Yameen noted that the Maldives and France enjoy long standing cordial relations and diplomatic relations between the two countries. He said that he hopes that the relation would continue to flourish during Emmanuel Macron's term in office, especially on the advancement of global interests such as climate change and counter-terrorism.

20th May will mark the 46th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and France.

Former economy minister Emmanuel Macron wins the French presidential election, defeating his far-right rival Marine Le Pen in Sunday's runoff vote, making him the youngest president in France's modern history, according to polling agency projections. The projections indicate that Macron garnered between 65 to 66.1 percent of votes, and Le Pen between 33.9 to 35 percent. Thousands of the independent winner's supporters gathered in high spirit at the courtyard outside the Louvre Museum in central Paris where a grand celebration for his victory has been planned for the whole night.

The official result will be announced on Wednesday.
