Today marks two years since the implementation of the Public Service Media Act.
The state media, Public Service Media (PSM), was established on April 28, 2015. In the past two years, PSM has fulfilled many requirements stipulated by law and gained unforeseen achievements. Since the establishment of Public Service Media (PSM), the state media has made revolutionary progress in the sector. While services, which were never before provided by the state media, have now been introduced, existing services have been improved significantly. PSM has been working tirelessly to ensure that its products get the approval of the masses.
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom enacted the Public Service Media Act on April 28, 2015. With this, the state media came under the umbrella of Public Service Media. The seven member Governing Board now oversees four TV channels in addition to Television Maldives (TVM). TVM has now become an HD channel. The new TV channels include Majlis TV, which airs content related to parliament and parliament proceedings; Yes TV targeting youth and sports; Munnaaru TV for religious enlightenment; Maldives TV, a joint effort with Ministry of Tourism for marketing Maldives as a tourist destination. In addition to this, a round the clock news and current affairs channel is in the pipeline. In addition to the then existing radio channels Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu and Dhivehi FM, PSM now boasts ownership of Dheenuge Adu, a radio channel focused on religious information.
PSM has also ventured into print media for the first time with the establishment of weekly magazine 'Maldheeb' and since January 1, 2017 PSM has been publishing a daily e-newsletter 'Maldheeb Daily' to send news to diplomats. Maldives Media Institute has been established by PSM in order to develop human resources in the field. The institute is affiliated with Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.
Within these two years PSM has also introduced international franchise shows in order to improve content quality, in addition to obtaining modern resources.
