The Dhivehi Language Academy has urged all parties to comply with the law on giving priority to the national language of the Maldives.
In a statement issued, the Dhivehi Language Academy stated that according to the Maldivian constitution all institutions, organisations, and offices in the Maldives should give importance to the national language. The Academy stated that all parties should prioritise the Dhivehi language when making their name boards.
The Academy highlighted that the law requires every signboard installed in public view on inhabited islands to display the name of the place in Thaana script in a manner that allows it to be read easily. The Academy stressed that complying with this requirement is mandatory.
The academy stated that if a law has been passed it is imperative to follow it accordingly. However the academy highlighted that certain parties have not been following the law as prescribed and that, in line with the spirit of the Constitution of the of Maldives, the academy urged all parties to act in accordance with the Law on Giving Priority to the National Language.
