President appoints Mohamed Shakeel as ECM President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Shakeel as the President of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).

Shakeel was appointed to the ECM on 24 June following parliamentary approval. His appointment as ECM President was approved by Parliament on 30 June, following the resignation of the previous Election Commission President Mohamed Zahid.

This is Shakeel’s second term as an ECM member. His previous service includes ECM member from 3 December 2014 to 9 May 2018. Before that, he served as the Director General of the Commission from 1 September 2013 to 3 December 2014. He has also served as Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation during the current administration.
