President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to develop a state-of-the-art police headquarters in Male’, alongside the modernisation of existing police stations.
Speaking at a ceremony held on the occasion of the 93rd Anniversary of the Maldives Police Service, the President said his government will give special priority to addressing current challenges in the police service. While the police service is the institution that works most closely with the public, the President said several efforts were undertaken over the last 2.5 years to improve existing structural and operational challenges within the police service. He acknowledged that although progress has been made over the past few years, there are still legal and structural gaps in delivering police services effectively, adding that a study will be conducted to identify the issues and bring about solutions according to police requirements.
The President further said while the government is building and upgrading police stations across the country, Male’ still lacks an adequate number of police stations given the large population that resides in the city. He said he would facilitate the construction of an additional building at the Iskandhar barracks, and the construction of a new and spacious police station in Hulhumale’ Phase II. The main police headquarters in Male’ will also be upgraded to modern standard, he said.
The President further said the government is committed to completing island police station development next year. He added that the police are performing well in maintaining peace and addressing social issues, and stressed that they operate without political influence.
