Swimmer Nishwan Ibrahim was named the student-athlete of the year for the second consecutive year on Tuesday night at the annual Milo Colours Awards.
Nishwan, who is studying at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education, was not present at the ceremony to claim the award as he is currently in South Africa for training.
121 student-athletes won awards in different categories at the awards ceremony held at Dharubaaruge Convention Centre in Male’ City.
Speaking at the ceremony, Education Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham said the colours awards had increased student participation in sporting activities.
The Colours Awards was introduced in 2014 by the Education Ministry to recognise students’ high achievement in sporting activities.
Under the awards nomination procedure, schools will nominate the best talent of each sport to the evaluation committee, which is comprised of officials from the Ministry and relevant national sport associations.
The ceremony also saw the awarding of sports scholarships to 11 students from Male’ City and the atolls who excelled in various sporting activities.
The Sports Scholarship Programme, which is an initiative of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, is an ambitious effort targeted at developing skilled young Maldivian athletes with a well-rounded education.
