Gov’t policies will safeguard workers’ rights: Economic Minister

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the government has already taken significant steps to protect workers’ rights and address challenges that they face.

Speaking to PSM News at the Labour Day rally held on 1 May, the minister said worker welfare is being prioritised in policymaking. These focus on responding to workers’ needs and concerns, he noted, adding that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged housing near resorts for tourism workers who live away from their families.

In the fisheries sector, the government has introduced immediate payment for fish purchases, a move the minister described as part of the government’s efforts to value the work of fishermen. Efforts are underway to harmonise salaries between civil service employees and other sectors, he said.

The minister further emphasised that workers’ rights are closely tied to the national economy. The government plans to continue strengthening protections and develop modern facilities for workers across industries, he said.
