The administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is actively advancing a strategic framework to bolster the nation’s small and medium-sized enterprises, most notably through the recent inauguration of the 'Maaranga' Market in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
A collaborative undertaking by the Maafushi Council, the Local Authority Company Limited, and the Business Centre Corporation (BCC), the market serves as a dedicated platform for local entrepreneurs to commercialise their goods. Given Maafushi’s standing as a cornerstone of the local tourism industry, government officials anticipate the initiative will yield substantial economic dividends for residents.
The programme officially commenced in April, with 12 kiosks showcasing traditional Maldivian cuisine and artisanal handicrafts. Early participants lauded the project, characterising the market as an invaluable opportunity for enterprises to elevate their commercial profile. Building on this momentum, a significantly expanded iteration is scheduled for 10 May to align with Children’s Day.
"Our primary objective is to capitalise on the unique significance of Children's Day by facilitating new opportunities for businesses," stated Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed, the Managing Director of the BCC, in an interview with PSM News.
Organisers remain prepared to expand the number of available kiosks should vendor interest exceed current capacity for the May event. "We are encouraging them to engage with our planned commemorative activities and fully participate in the market," Ziyau added, noting the strategic intent to encourage broader business engagement through the occasion’s significance.
