HRCM urges respect for electoral rights ahead of Saturday’s vote

Ahead of Saturday’s local council and women’s development committee elections, as well as the referendum on synchronising the presidential and parliamentary elections, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has issued a strong appeal for the protection of democratic rights.

In a public statement, the HRCM called on all political parties, candidates, and citizens to refrain from any actions that could undermine the rights of voters or candidates. The commission emphasised that free and fair elections are foundational to democracy and are guaranteed under the constitution.

To ensure transparency, 78 HRCM officials will be deployed across 21 islands in 18 atolls, with additional observers stationed in Maafushi prison. These teams will monitor 208 ballot boxes in the Male’ area and 104 in the atolls from 6:30 am until the close of polling.

The HRCM reiterated that voting is a fundamental right and urged citizens to participate honestly and faithfully in shaping the nation’s future. It also stressed the importance of resolving political differences through lawful and peaceful means, calling for mutual respect and adherence to democratic principles throughout the electoral process.
