Dharumavantha and IGMH introduce new hip surgery technology

The Malé City Group of Hospitals has formally inaugurated "core decompression" surgical technology at Dharumavantha Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), an advancement intended to treat the deterioration of hip joint bone known as osteonecrosis, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, the group’s Chief Executive Officer, announced.

The implementation of the procedure marks a significant enhancement of the orthopaedic services available within the country, utilising specialised instrumentation to clear decaying bone and facilitate tissue regeneration through the application of bone grafts and platelet-rich plasma.

Haleem characterised the surgical approach as a pivot toward minimally invasive intervention. Because the procedure requires only a minor incision, the physical toll on the patient is significantly diminished, a factor Haleem noted would vastly improve the likelihood of a "rapid and seamless recovery".

The rollout of the service follows a period of rigorous preparation involving doctors, nurses, and technical staff across the orthopaedic departments of both institutions. Haleem affirmed that the institutional objective remains the uninterrupted provision of high-quality healthcare for the citizenry.

The expansion follows a broader effort to introduce specialised treatments previously unavailable domestically, including the recent launch of vitreoretinal surgery services for advanced ophthalmic care at both primary hospital sites.
