New central power station project inaugurated in Addu City

In a significant stride towards resolving longstanding utility challenges, the Central Power Station project aimed at strengthening electricity services in Addu City has been officially inaugurated.

The ceremony, held in Hithadhoo, marks the commencement of practical work on an initiative pledged by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to find a permanent solution to the city’s power issues.

The project was inaugurated by the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan. The event was attended by key figures including Captain Vincent Pirot, Area Manager of Anglo Belgian Corporation, Abdulla Saeed, CEO of contractor Definite Solutions, and members of Parliament representing Addu City.

Addressing the gathering, Fenaka Corporation Limited Managing Director Mohamed Najah highlighted the chronic nature of the electricity problem that has plagued Addu City for many years. He confirmed that the contract has now been awarded to a new contractor, Definite Solutions, and that on-the-ground work has formally begun. Fenaka has set an ambitious target to complete the entire project before the end of next year.

Upon completion, the new power plant will boast a substantial generation capacity of 26.37 MW, which is expected to finally bring stable and reliable electricity to the city's residents and businesses. Additionally, Najah emphasised efforts to improve water and sewerage services across the atoll to complement the power station project.

The project will utilise modern, low-speed engines supplied by the Anglo-Belgian Corporation (ABC), a move that signifies a major upgrade. These European-quality engines are noted for their superior reliability and longevity compared to the existing high-speed engines, promising a more robust and efficient power generation system.

In addition to the core power infrastructure, the project includes the construction of two new office buildings in Addu City. These facilities are designed to provide a modern and improved working environment for Fenaka employees, further enhancing operational efficiency and service delivery for the community, Najah said.
