More than 400 applications have been submitted under the category allowing individuals to apply for land even if their spouse already owns housing, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced.
The ministry opened applications for the scheme on 8 March. According to the latest figures, a total of 418 applications have been received so far.
The policy was announced in this year’s Presidential Address, with the aim of addressing concerns raised by the public over eligibility restrictions in previous housing schemes. The new rule allows individuals to apply for land even if their spouse already owns a house or flat, with the objective of ensuring that every family has access to housing.
1,250 plots of land will be allocated under the "Goathi Gedhoru" scheme, as per the ministry. Two categories have been established for applicants: one for residents of Malé City and another for residents of other islands.
The ministry has also published the relevant regulations, required documentation and the criteria for awarding points in the Government Gazette.
Applications for the scheme will remain open until 30 April.
