President calls for stronger Commonwealth cooperation on climate and debt challenges

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the need for deeper cooperation among Commonwealth nations to address climate resilience, concessional financing and sustainable debt solutions.

In a message issued to mark Commonwealth Day, President Dr Muizzu said the Commonwealth had long served as a symbol of unity, helping safeguard peace, promote good governance and strengthen international collaboration.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the president said it reflected the shared responsibility of member states in tackling global challenges.

He said the theme captured the spirit of unity and partnership required for what he described as a Commonwealth “fit for purpose”.

For the Maldives,President noted, the theme closely mirrors the country’s national priorities. These include strengthening climate resilience, expanding opportunities for education mobility, developing sustainable tourism and accelerating digitalisation.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring that the benefits of these initiatives reach communities across the country.

As a Small Island Developing State, the Maldives remains particularly exposed to the growing impacts of climate change and external economic shocks, the president said.

President Muizzu’s remarks coincide with the 77th anniversary of the Commonwealth.

He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening cooperation within the organisation, saying it was vital that every member state, regardless of size is able to prosper.

Looking ahead, the president said the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting would offer an important opportunity to renew shared commitments among member nations.

The Maldives, he added, looks forward to actively engaging in discussions aimed at delivering meaningful outcomes for the wider Commonwealth community.
