The Maldives is seeking to strengthen its position in the global tourism market as it takes part in this year’s ITB Berlin, one of the world’s largest travel trade fairs.
A delegation of 159 representatives from 67 Maldivian tourism companies is attending the event in Berlin, Germany, aiming to showcase the country’s natural beauty and hospitality to international buyers and tour operators.
The annual fair, brings together thousands of exhibitors and industry professionals from across the globe. For the Maldives, tourism remains the backbone of the economy, making international promotion a key priority.
Representatives from resorts, guesthouses, safari vessel operators and travel agencies are using the platform to hold meetings, negotiate contracts and develop new travel packages tailored to evolving market demands.
A spokesperson for Ifuru Island Resort told PSM News that participation in the fair presented a “golden opportunity” to expand business operations. The resort is currently in discussions with several international partners and is developing specialised packages aimed at attracting more visitors.
Another exhibitor, Resort Life, said that interest at this year’s event had been strong. A company representative noted that packages promoted at last year’s fair were fully booked, and that early signs this year pointed to renewed demand, with both direct purchases and customised travel collaborations under discussion.
Industry participants say the fair also offers insight into emerging travel trends and shifting consumer preferences across key source markets. Such information, they argue, is essential for ensuring the Maldives remains competitive amid growing global competition.
Exhibitors emphasised that the event is not only about destination marketing, but also about securing long-term partnerships with major international tour operators. Several companies indicated that discussions were under way to sign agreements covering the coming years.
The Maldives has long marketed itself as a premium, safe and environmentally rich destination. Officials and industry leaders say sustained engagement at major global trade events such as ITB Berlin is crucial to maintaining visitor numbers and supporting economic growth.
