Gov’t takes proactive measures to safeguard Maldives against Middle East blowback

The Maldives’ government has acted swiftly and decisively with the roll out of key measures to safeguard the nation against detrimental consequences from the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

A key step in this regard is the establishment of a Special Cabinet Committee in response to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The committee had been formed to implement coordinated measures to address any difficulties Maldivians may face because of the situation. The committee includes Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, and includes the Minister of Defence, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon; the Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer; the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed; the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen; the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan; the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim; the Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed; and the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

Another key concern of citizens would be the availability of essential food items. The Ministry of Economic Development has addressed this concern by ensuring that all essential food items will be made available without any disruption. The Ministry also stated that the government is working continuously to ensure supply remains unchanged and that it is closely monitoring the situation in Middle East. In this regard the Ministry detailed coordinated efforts with relevant stakeholders to study the impacts of disruptions to global supply chains due to escalations in the region and that efforts are made especially to ensure that the supply lines used to import foods to Maldives remains stable while also proactively seeking alternative markets to ensure guaranteed supply. While the Ministry has detailed these measures to alleviate concerns of citizens, the broader Government has also stressed that uninterrupted supply of food items and essential goods remains the key priority in these challenging times. The Government has provided full assurance to the public that all necessary measures are being taken, in collaboration with state institutions and private enterprises, to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and to address challenges in the importation process.

Furthermore, the Government is closely monitoring any potential impact this situation may have on the nation's financial and economic stability. As the Maldives primarily imports fuel through Oman, the Ministry of Finance and Treasury has stated that they are working in coordination with the State Trading Organisation (STO) to identify potential disruptions to the fuel supply chain and implement measures to ensure a continuous supply of fuel. Additionally, the Finance Ministry has stated that it is closely monitoring the potential impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on tourist arrival patterns and international travel networks, given the Maldives' significant economic reliance on the tourism sector. Based on these assessments, the government plans to implement strategic fiscal policy adjustments as necessary to safeguard macroeconomic stability and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential public services.

According to the latest statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), national reserves are currently maintained at historically high levels. The Ministry highlighted that this robust reserve position serves as a critical buffer for the government to navigate external economic shocks, facilitate essential imports, and effectively execute strategic economic measures.

In response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the government is also providing necessary assistance and coordinating arrangements for tourists who are unable to depart. To this end, the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has established comprehensive measures to ensure the comfort and well-being of tourists currently accommodated at the airport.

The Government reiterates that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the nation’s economy and fiscal position remain committed and steadfast on the positive trajectory.
