President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has issued a series of official decrees amending the administrative jurisdictions of Addu City and the islands of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, in Addu Atoll.
The changes follow a public referendum held on 25 October 2025 among residents of Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. Voters were asked whether to restructure the Addu City Council and redefine the administrative boundaries within the southernmost atoll.
Under the new arrangements, the jurisdiction of Addu City has been revised. The islands of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, which were previously administered under Addu City, have now been designated as separate inhabited islands.
The amendments were formalised through Presidential Decrees No. 3/2026, 4/2026 and 5/2026. The decrees were issued under Section 56-1(a) of the Decentralisation Act (Act No. 7/2010), which grants the president authority to determine and designate the jurisdictions of city and island councils.
Revised administrative charts reflecting the updated jurisdictions of Addu City, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo have been codified and published in the Government Gazette.
