Plans underway to permanent farmers’ market

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya, has stated that efforts are underway to convert the Farmers’ Market, opened temporarily for Ramadan, into a permanent marketplace.

Launched on 18 February, the Farmers’ Market was established at the Malé North Harbour area by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in collaboration with Maldives Ports Limited. The market is aimed at travellers seeking to purchase locally grown produce during Ramadan.

Ramadan traditionally marks a period of increased demand for agricultural products from the atolls. In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Dr Maryam Mariya said farmers from numerous islands participated in the market. She highlighted Goidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, noting that farms on the island are certified under the Maldives Good Agricultural Practices (MGAP) scheme.

The Minister stated that watermelons grown on the island are cultivated without chemicals. She added that food security remains a government priority, supported by dedicated policies, and that the Farmers’ Market plays a key role in these efforts.

Dr Maryam Mariya further stated that discussions are ongoing with several islands to obtain MGAP certification. “Certification guarantees safe and secure food for residents. I believe it is very important,” she said.

She also noted that the initiative ensures affordable prices for residents while creating transportation and trade opportunities for the islands. Discussions with Maldives Ports Limited are continuing as part of efforts to establish a permanent location for the market by the end of Ramadan, she added.
