A new mosque has been officially opened in Gan, Laamu Atoll.

The inauguration was carried out by State Minister of Islamic Affairs Al-Ustaz Abdul Azeez Jamal Aboobakuru. The ceremony was also attended by senior officials of the Gan Council as well as island residents.

The government-funded mosque, located in Thundhee Aabaadhu of Gan, can accommodate 700 worshippers, and includes space for both men and women. In addition to worship, religious programmes can also be hosted at the mosque.

The current government is carrying out various infrastructure projects in the Islamic sector across the nation. In this regard, 15 mosques were opened to coincide with Ramadan this year.

Last year, the government launched the practical work of a total of Islamic 90 projects including the construction of 74 mosques, seven Islamic centres, three Quran centres, and six endowment buildings. Over USD 1.25 million was spent last year on mosque repairs alone, while USD 973,000 has been allocated for the purpose from this year’s budget. Islamic centre construction projects will also be launched in ten additional islands this year.
