Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has described the relocation of domestic flight operations to the newly upgraded Terminal 2 at Velana International Airport as a significant enhancement in service delivery and passenger experience.
He made the remarks at a ceremony to mark the official commencement of domestic operations at the modernised terminal.
The Vice President noted that, following the recent inauguration of the new international terminal, the swift completion and transition to the upgraded domestic facility represents a key milestone in the airport’s broader development trajectory. He stated that the improved infrastructure would deliver measurable benefits to both Maldivian citizens and the national economy.
Highlighting longstanding concerns, he observed that the previous domestic terminal which is a vital gateway for residents and tourists travelling between islands had required modernisation for some time. Capacity constraints and infrastructure limitations, he said, had presented operational challenges and restricted the full economic potential of domestic aviation services.
Vice President further emphasised that the opening of Terminal 2 reflects the priority accorded by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration to addressing infrastructure challenges through timely and comprehensive interventions. The new facility offers expanded space, improved passenger flow, and upgraded service standards compared to its predecessor.
He stated that the development aligns with the President’s broader economic vision, centred on strengthening connectivity and resolving key service bottlenecks affecting citizens.
The Vice President also commended the management and staff of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) for completing the renovation and operational transition within a compressed timeframe. He expressed confidence that Terminal 2 will enhance passenger convenience and elevate the overall standard of domestic air travel in the Maldives.
