New print of MVR 20 and 100 banknotes enters circulation

The central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has issued new MVR 20 and MVR 100 notes under the “Ran Dhihafaheh” note series.

According to MMA, the new batch was issued to meet the new demand for cash in the economy and to replace damaged and unfit notes returned to the MMA. This batch includes MVR 100 notes received by the authority on 2 February and MVR 20 notes received on 15 February. The notes aim to improve cash circulation across the economy.

The new notes are signed by Governor Ahmed Munawwar, with the printed date 31 July 2025 (6 Safar 1447).

MMA said issuing new notes to replenish stock is a common practice within the currency management system. The design of the MVR 20 note has been changed significantly in the new batch, with the Dhivehi Rufiyaa symbol now included on both sides of the note for the first time. The updated MVR 100 note also features the Rufiyaa symbol, as in the latest version issued by MMA on 7 July.

MMA said that all existing MVR 20 and MVR 100 notes in circulation will remain valid and in circulation.
