President departs on an official visit to Bangladesh

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has departed on an official visit to People's Republic of Bangladesh.

The visit will take place from 16 to 18 February 2026. The visit comes at the invitation of Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the government of Bangladesh, to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new Bangladeshi government, scheduled for 17 February 2026.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a landslide parliamentary election, securing a resounding mandate in a pivotal vote that is expected to restore political stability in the South Asian nation.

Results published by the Bangladesh’s Election Commission gave the BNP and its allies 212 out of 299 parliamentary seats. With this win, Tarique Rahman, the son of former premier Khaleda Zia and assassinated former President Ziaur Rahman is set to become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. President Dr Muizzu is schedule to meet the incoming new Prime Minister during his official visit.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh were established on 22 September 1978.
