Cancer treatment in atolls marks major step forward

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the introduction of cancer treatment services in the atolls represents a major step forward in strengthening the country’s healthcare system.

The President made the remarks in a message shared on social media to mark World Cancer Day, observed annually on 4 February. He paid tribute to cancer survivors and those currently undergoing treatment, noting that their courage continues to inspire the nation.

President Muizzu said cancer claims many lives each year, underscoring the urgent need to raise public awareness, take preventive measures, and ensure adequate support for those affected by the disease.

He highlighted the recent launch of chemotherapy services at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital as a key milestone in the national response to cancer. The President said the expansion of such services beyond Greater Malé has eased both the financial and psychological burden on patients and their families by bringing treatment closer to home.

The President also expressed appreciation for the dedication of healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, and non-governmental organisations supporting cancer patients and their families, acknowledging their role in providing care, guidance, and hope.

World Cancer Day is marked each year to promote awareness, encourage prevention, and strengthen treatment systems for people living with cancer.
