MTCC reports strong turnout for gov’t taxi line driver recruitment drive

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) has revealed a positive response to its ongoing walk-in interview for drivers as part of its new government taxi line service.

Held at the Maafannu Bus Terminal from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the recruitment drive aims to hire 407 drivers—285 on a full-time and 122 on a part-time basis—to support the launch of a modern, reliable taxi service across Male’.

MTCC, entrusted with operating the service under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, emphasised that priority will be given to candidates already registered in the Ministry’s official taxi driver registry.

This initiative stems from the government’s commitment to addressing public difficulties in accessing taxis and enhancing urban mobility. The service, modeled after international ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Grab, will operate 24/7 using a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) in three different sizes.

Initial delays due to concerns over vehicle suitability for local conditions have been resolved, with the Ministry confirming that vehicle customisation and production are now underway.
