Maldives nears 300 Hafiz milestone as gov’t amplifies Quran memorisation efforts

The number of individuals who have memorised the Holy Quran in the Maldives has risen to 291, with the government projecting the figure to exceed 300 before the upcoming Holy month of Ramadan.

The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announced the progress, attributing it to state-led initiatives promoting Quranic education.

Under its vision to foster a Quran-loving society, the government has doubled the monthly allowance for Huffaz and introduced incentives such as Umrah opportunities for memorisation achievers. A special graduation ceremony for 30 new Huffaz will also be held on 27 Ramadan, marking a historic moment in the nation’s Islamic journey.

With over 1,500 students currently undergoing Hafiz programmes nationwide, the administration aims to produce 500 Huffaz within five years. To further encourage memorisation, the prestigious "President’s Special Medal"—previously reserved for top-performing Huffaz—is now being awarded to all graduates.
