Media outlets registered for one year now eligible for state financing

Media outlets registered for one year can now apply for state financing. The media regulatory body, Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, said the change was brought to implement President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to financially empower media outlets.

The requirements for state financing for media outlets previously included being registered for a minimum of three years. A total of 18 media outlets qualified for funding under these requirements. However, with the new change, the number of beneficiaries is expected to increase to about 60 media outlets.

The criteria for funding have also been revised under the new policy. Allocation will now be based on the media houses’ progress in administrative capacity, infrastructure, public service content, and public awareness, with marks awarded in each area.

While the payment system has also been revised, assistance will now be provided as a lump sum instead of three instalments. The number of employees will also be considered in awarding marks.

This year’s state budget has allocated USD 1.75 million for media support, 0.1 percent of the estimated state revenue. The government believes the financial support will strengthen private media by enabling it to operate as financially viable and independent entities that practice responsible journalism and create reliable employment opportunities.
