The government has so far dismissed 205 political appointees from their positions, according to Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef.
Speaking to PSM News, Spokesperson Shareef said the dismissals were carried out as part of the government’s policy to reduce state expenditure, with 205 political appointees removed from four different positions.
Those affected include state ministers, deputy ministers, senior political directors and political directors, the spokesperson said.
Shareef said the process of removing political appointees from their positions is still ongoing and that further political appointees are expected to be dismissed in the coming period.
“Of the work carried out so far, 205 employees have been dismissed. This includes employees who held the positions of state minister, deputy minister, senior political director and political director. The work is not yet complete, so this number may change in the future,” Shareef said.
In addition, work is currently under way to right-size state-owned enterprises (SOEs), according to the spokesperson.
Once the right-sizing of all SOEs is completed, Shareef said the number of people removed from employment is expected to exceed the number of people recruited into government jobs by the current administration.
