Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) on Thursday has been contracted to design and build a drainage and ground water system in Thinadhoo Island, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
The project also includes the installation of aquacells beneath pavements and necessary civil works.
At a ceremony held at the Environment Ministry, the project agreement was signed by Minister of Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim and Deputy Managing Director of MRDC, Ahmed Mamdhooh.
Environment Ministry says the MVR 37.9 million project, once completed, would help reduce flooding in the island, and is expected to be completed within eight months.
The rainwater collected by the drainage system will be used to replenish the island’s fresh water lens, the Ministry said.
