President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the first Urban Primary Healthcare Centre in the Male‘ region, established in Maafannu to advance the administration’s commitment to strengthen the public health system.
The President inaugurated the Centre on Wednesday evening at a special ceremony held at the Urban Primary Healthcare Centre, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
The event also marked the completion and official handover of the facility, developed to expand access to healthcare services under the Male’ City Group of Hospitals. The project was contracted to the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
After formally assuming charge of the Centre, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals, expressed his gratitude to the President and emphasised that the establishment of such facilities will significantly enhance the services available to the public under the President’s initiative.
In line with the President’s health policy, the Urban Primary Healthcare Centres are designed to support disease prevention and promote a healthier society. The Centre will provide three core services: General Practitioner (GP) consultations; referrals to specialists and consultants for cases requiring advanced care; and the delivery of national public health programmes. Through its Child Health Clinic, the Centre will offer growth and development monitoring and routine vaccinations. Additional clinics will deliver services that promote healthy habits, support mental well-being, and assist individuals who wish to quit smoking.
Emphasising the administration’s focus on preventive healthcare, the Government has decided to establish five additional centres in the Male’ region – three in Male’ and two in Hulhumale’. Strengthening the health sector remains a priority and will receive the highest allocation in the 2026 budget.
Following the inauguration, the President and First Lady toured the facility and met with staff. Senior officials from the Male’ City Group of Hospitals, government officials, and healthcare providers attended the ceremony.
