Thinadhoo development will benefits whole region: Council

Thinadhoo Island, Gaaf Dhaal Atoll, is one of the main population centres in the south of the country, and is currently seeing numerous developmental projects.

Some projects have already been completed, while other are still in progress.

Thinadhoo Island Council said the island, which has a population of 7,523, has over 3,000 residents who have migrated from other islands.

The atoll’s only regional school and hospital is located in Thinadhoo, which attracts frequent visitors from other islands in the atoll, as well as many who migrate to the island in search of a better life. The Government has been developing housing flats in the island to accommodate the growing population. Some of these housing projects have already been completed.

The island’s main sources of livelihood are fishing, construction and trade. In addition, private and public sector job opportunities are increasing in the island.

Thinadhoo is one of the islands where the government is undertaking numerous developmental projects. The government has so far reclaimed 50 hectares of land, expanding the island’s land area from 113 hectares to 167 hectares.

The island has 7 schools, providing preschool to higher secondary education. With the introduction of local tourism, Thinadhoo now has two guesthouses. The government is now carrying out projects to develop a museum park in the island and redevelop the harbour area. In addition, the island’s road development project is nearing completion.
