First Lady Emphasises Health as Foundation for National Progress and Happiness

Health must be prioritised in nation-building to achieve productivity, civility and happiness, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has said.

The First Lady made the remark at the launch of the national campaign “Healthy Life – Happy Society”, which aims to raise awareness about the health risks of poor dietary habits.

The First Lady stated that learning and maintaining a good lifestyle and eating habits are key to living a healthy and fulfilling life. She said that good health is essential in building a country and contributes to progress in numerous ways.

"Sharp minds, active hands, skilled and courageous workers can only emerge then. Such a country will be happy, prosperous, civilised and productive," the First Lady said.

Highlighting Islam’s emphasis on good health and balanced living, the First Lady noted that the Qur'an and Sunnah encourages the consumption of halal food and moderation in eating and drinking. Therefore, as Muslims, it will be easier for Maldivians to uphold a healthy and happy nation by following these teachings, she said.

The First Lady further said the people of Maldives have always cooperated in the national initiatives that serve the common good. She recalled the strong public support and participation in major national campaigns led by former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom and Ibrahim Nasir. She expressed confidence that the government will continue to receive support for such national activities.

"The generational ban announced by the President has also received an overwhelming response," she noted, commending the people’s cooperative nature.

The First Lady said a national campaign to bring about positive change in the lifestyle of the people has been launched at a time when the country is in dire need of it.
