The Maldives has become a member of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
The Committee is the primary UN body mandated to promote international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. Membership in COPUOS enables Maldives to contribute to shaping the global governance of outer space, ensuring that space science and technology serve as tools for sustainable development, innovation, and climate resilience.
For the Maldives, this represents an opportunity to access and apply space-derived data to strengthen climate monitoring, maritime safety, environmental protection, and disaster preparedness.
Along with the Maldives, Honduras, Zimbabwe, Malta, The Gambia, and Côte d’Ivoire also gained COPUOS membership.
