President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a decree amending the questions to be posed in the upcoming referendum on the jurisdictional composition of Addu City, particularly concerning the constituencies of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo.
The Presidential Decree, issued Sunday, modifies an earlier decree published on 6 October 2025. The amendment was made under Article 115(p) of the Constitution of the Maldives and Section 4(c) of the Public Referendum Act, following the recommendation of the Cabinet.
The new decree removes the question relating to the possible establishment of a combined council for Addu Hulhudhoo and Addu Meedhoo.
Accordingly, the referendum will now solely seek the opinion of residents on the establishment of separate councils for the constituencies of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo. The revised questions to be posed in the referendum are as follows:
For the residents of Addu Hulhudhoo:
1. Should a separate council be established for Addu Hulhudhoo?
For the residents of Addu Meedhoo:
1. Should a separate council be established for Addu Meedhoo?
For the residents of Addu Feydhoo:
1. Should a separate council be established for Addu Feydhoo?
As announced by the Elections Commission, the referendum will be open to all registered voters within the relevant constituencies and is scheduled to take place on 25 October 2025. Voting will be conducted from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with results expected to be announced the following day.
