Heritage Institute Convenes Session for Signature Scholarship Applicants

The National Institute for Maldivian Heritage Research convened an information session for prospective applicants to its ‘Signature Scholarship’ programme, a government-backed initiative aimed at restoring Maldivian nationhood through academic inquiry and cultural preservation.

Held at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, the session outlined the programme’s structure and objectives. The Heritage Research Institute has confirmed that a second session will be convened to accommodate additional interest.

The Signature Scholarship offers fully sponsored academic placements for 40 candidates to pursue a master’s degree in Research and Publication at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM). Designed to cultivate a new generation of heritage professionals, the programme focuses on the intellectual and cultural dimensions of Maldivian identity.

This academic initiative forms part of a broader national strategy. The institute has positioned the scholarships as a cornerstone of efforts to revive Maldivian nationhood, an agenda repeatedly underscored by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. In his inaugural presidential address, the president identified the restoration of nationhood as a central policy commitment. That pledge was reaffirmed in his most recent address, which reiterated the importance of heritage studies as a strategic priority.

The programme builds upon a national project announced last year, which initially offered research opportunities to 50 scholars. Under the current structure, participants will engage in a two-year research period, dedicating two days each month to academic work at the Heritage Research Institute.

Support for scholars extends beyond tuition coverage. Each participant will undertake focused study of at least one traditional Maldivian art or skill. The institute has also committed to facilitating the publication of research monographs and scholarly texts produced under the programme.

Established as a government entity, the National Institute for Maldivian Heritage Research is mandated to revive and disseminate knowledge of the Dhivehi language, history, culture, traditions, and patriotic legacy. Its mission includes fostering a deeper public understanding of nationalism and cultivating a renewed sense of civic identity.
