President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a comprehensive housing project will be implemented in Kunburudhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll next year, underscoring his administration's commitment to equitable development for even the smallest communities.
Speaking at a community meeting with the residents of Kunburudhoo during his visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll, President Dr Muizzu assured that the government would focus special attention to a range of newly launched and signed projects crucial for the island’s progress.
During his address, the President highlighted the significance of the ongoing development initiatives.
"Hopefully these projects are being implemented to bring out-and-out development to this island. Our policy is to do things without discrimination even if the population is small,” he said.
He noted that Kunburudhoo, the smallest island in the atoll with a population of just over 600 people spread across approximately five hectares, stands to benefit immensely from the planned land reclamation and harbour development.
The President elaborated on the housing initiative, explaining that the project would be included in next year's budget after assessing available land, even before the planned land reclamation is completed.
"Even before the land is dredged, we will consider the amount of space available from the existing land in the island and include it in next year's budget for a housing project in this island as well," he affirmed.
During the meeting, agreements were signed for the Kunburudhoo land reclamation and harbour development project, as well as a school project, both awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC).
Beyond housing and core infrastructure, the President inaugurated a new football stadium and multipurpose court, anticipating these facilities will provide significant opportunities for the young sports enthusiasts on the island.
During the visit, he also officially inaugurated ATM service on Kunburudhoo before witnessing the groundbreaking on the new extension building of the island’s health centre.
President Dr Muizzu officially handed over the Fofalha Gau lagoon in the atoll to the Kunburudhoo Island Council, following his decision to incorporate it as part of the island.
Kunburudhoo’s economy is primarily driven by residents working in resorts and fishing, sectors anticipated to benefit from the enhanced connectivity and facilities.
