Women in Policing Summit Highlights Need for Greater Inclusion and Support

The Maldives Women in Policing Summit 2025, held to enhance the leadership of women in law enforcement, has successfully concluded. This was the first summit of its kind held in the Maldives dedicated to promoting the role of women police officers.

The three-day summit concluded with a closing ceremony attended by Ayesha Nurain Janah, Chairperson of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Speaking at the event, Nurain noted that there are already many skilled and capable women working across various fields in the Maldives. However, she emphasised that greater cooperation from men and society as a whole is essential to further increase women's participation.

"Maldivian women are already becoming empowered. More opportunities should be created to expand their roles. Opportunities and cooperation must be championed. There are many educated women with extensive experience across different fields," she said.

Nurain further highlighted the importance of building on the knowledge and experience shared by international agencies, while also recognising existing policies, cultural norms and the woman progress women have made in society.

The summit was attended by more than 50 participants from security and law enforcement sectors, including representatives from seven local agencies and ten international partners and countries. Speaking to PSM News, participants said they received valuable information on overcoming challenges faced by women in expanding their professional roles.

Discussions during the summit covered a wide range of topics related to developing the skills of women police officers and other law enforcement professionals, addressing workplace challenges, and identifying practical solutions. The event also featured sessions on investigations, technical areas and intelligence work, as well as sessions on sharing experiences and best practices from developed countries and agencies.
