The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) has launched a special training programme titled Peace Journalist, aimed at strengthening the role of the media in maintaining moderation and fostering a spirit of tolerance.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Deputy Minister of Defence Fathmath Mizna Ali stressed the importance of conducting such a programme in the Maldives.
"In today's digital age, information circulates faster than we can imagine. Unfortunately, disinformation, propaganda and hate speech are spreading just as rapidly. Certain groups use digital platforms to distort the truth. So, while journalists are our leading defenders, we can eliminate hate speech with the right tools,” she said.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the Peace Journalist programme seeks to raise awareness about the media’s role in combating extremist rhetoric that threatens social stability and security. The programme aims to empower journalists to advocate for peace and friendship.
As part of the programme, participants will be equipped with modern media tools and essential skills and knowledge needed to produce content that promotes peace and tolerance.
The training programme, conducted as a collaboration between the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and IMCTC, will run from 6 to 9 October.
