PGO, ACC and MPS Collaborate to Expedite Major Corruption Cases

The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has announced that it is working closely with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Maldives Police Service (MPS) to accelerate the investigation and prosecution of major corruption cases.

The PGO stated that while efforts are ongoing to expedite significant cases, an investigation linked to the corruption at Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Company (MMPRC) has recently been concluded, with prosecution efforts currently underway.

According to PGO, special attention is being given to cases involving Fenaka Corporation Limited, with the office instructing the ACC to expedite the investigation. This includes following up on a directive issued on 26 January this year, which requires the ACC to prepare and submit a directive to complete the investigation of these cases within the stipulated timeframe.

PGO said it also asked the ACC on 19 January to cancel the agreements that prevented prosecution of certain individuals in the MMPRC-related corruption cases. The ACC has now been directed to submit the progress of the investigations to the PGO by 8 October for consultation with the office.

The PGO revealed that prosecution teams have been formed to provide 24-hour support to ACC in expediting these cases. The PGO has also asked both the MPS and ACC to conduct a comprehensive investigation into civilians who received undue benefit from the corruption cases. The prosecution is also working to identify criminally acquired property and funds tied to these cases and facilitate their recovery.
