A significant national initiative is underway to cultivate a generation deeply rooted in Islamic teachings, with the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announcing that 1,500 individuals are currently enrolled in Hafiz classes.
The government has set an ambitious goal to vastly increase the number of Huffaz, and the Minister revealing the number has now gone up to 284 which is expected to rise further to 500 within the next five years.
Minister Dr Shaheem highlighted the ongoing efforts, stating that a substantial portion of these students are enrolled at the National Center for the Holy Quran and the Ilm Institute, which are spearheading the drive in Islamic education. He further revealed that 50 Huffaz are expected to graduate on the 27th of Ramadan next year, building on the success of last Ramadan when 24 Huffaz successfully completed their memorisation.
This concerted drive is strongly supported by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has actively urged the populace to embrace Quran memorisation and foster a generation that cherishes the Holy Book.
Demonstrating his commitment, President Dr Muizzu significantly increased the monthly allowance for Huffaz in June, raising it to USD 259.
He has also chosen to personally present medals and prizes to Huffaz on 27 Ramadan, a gesture aimed at recognising and encouraging their dedication.
In a notable policy change, the Presidential Special Medal for Huffaz, previously awarded only to those who passed with the highest grade, will now be bestowed upon any Hafiz who successfully completes memorisation, regardless of their score, underscoring a broader recognition of this profound achievement.
