Former Managing Director of Maldive Gas Pvt Ltd, Abdulla Maumoon has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison on two counts of bribery.
The prosecution accused Maumoon of accepting bribes from a company contracted to procure items for Maldive Gas in 2016, during his tenure as Managing Director under the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, Maumoon was convicted on Monday on two of seven bribery charges against him. He was sentenced to 12 years, nine months, and 18 days in prison. The verdict on the remaining five charges will be delivered at a later date.
Cases were first filed against Maumoon, several of his family members, and companies allegedly linked to him on 18 April last year. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) referred the charges to the Prosecutor General’s Office on 22 January 2023.
The Prosecutor General's Office said investigations revealed that during Maumoon’s tenure at Maldive Gas, he received USD 201,439 in bribes while securing a deal to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from an international supplier. The funds were deposited into companies linked to him as well as the bank accounts of some of his family members.
