Parliament approves amendment to Freedom of Assembly Act

Parliament on Wednesday passed the Bill on Amendment to the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act.

The bill, tabled by MP for Maafannu-South Abdulla Rifau, was passed with 37 votes in favour and 26 votes against. There were 2 abstentions.

The bill stipulates that streets protests and other such activities can only be held in areas approved by the Home Ministry, and organisers are required to obtain prior permission from Maldives Police Service.

The Committee report on the Bill was presented to the floor by Chair of the Committee on National Security, MP for Gemanafushi Jameel Usman.

Ten Members spoke during time allocated for debate on the Committee report.
