The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced the reopening of the Henveiru Ferry Terminal area to passenger vessels, a move aimed to alleviate congestion caused by the ongoing widening of the Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu.
In a statement, MTCC confirmed that the harbour area adjacent to the terminal will now be utilised for the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers traveling on Atoll ferry speedboats. Operators have been advised to enter the harbour area to board passengers 10 minutes before scheduled departures.
According to MTCC, the adjustment will be a relief to ferry and speedboat operators, who have traditionally used the area which have been closed off for the road project for services connecting Malé to other atolls.
MTTC said that ferry operators and the public will be informed of any new traffic arrangements.
The reopening and operational changes are a direct response to difficulties arising from the Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu modernisation project, a government initiative designed to improve traffic flow and create a safer, more comfortable urban environment for residents.
MTCC Project Manager Abdulla Faiz spoke to PSM News, confirming that the new traffic flow plans and any closures would be communicated through multiple channels.
"The changes in traffic flow will be shared on police social media, and the city council will inform the crew about the changes in traffic flow. The Maldives Police Service, MTCC and relevant agencies will provide the information,” he said.
This development follows an announcement that the Henveiru and Hulhumalé Ferry Terminals would be made available to public ferry operators to help ease congestion at Malé's busy harbours.
